The Advanced and Novel Accelerator for High Energy Physics Roadmap Workshop, ANAR2017, was held from 25 to 28 April 2017 at CERN. This event was organized at the initiative of the International Committee for Future Accelerators (http://www.lpgp.u-psud.fr/icfaana) and brought together 80 scientists from Europe, the USA and Asia to discuss the main challenges ahead for building future accelerators based on advanced concepts. Four different technologies, based on wakefields driven by laser or particle beams in plasma or dielectric media, were examined during this workshop in the perspective of defining a roadmap towards a multi-TeV lepton collider.
This workshop is timely in the context of recent discussions of national roadmaps (e.g. in the US) and the coming update of the European Strategy in 2020, which should take into account advanced accelerators development. A report summarizing the main discussions and conclusions of the ANAR2017 workshop will be published by the end of June 2017. It was emphasized that a strong, united and coordinated community is essential to push forward the development of ambitious accelerators based on advanced concepts. An international study group should be put together to steer this activity. The next step will be a working group session scheduled in September 2017 during the EAAC workshop.
